Three new herbicide molecules have been authorised in France for the weed control in cereal crops since the beginning of 1997.
Flurtamon, the first representative of the furanon family has been registered since February 1997 in association with diflufenicanil in a Rhône-Poulenc product known as Carat. It is used in the autumn for weed control at an early post-emergence stage.
Methyl flupyrsulfuron, the authorisation of which dates back to October 1997 in Lexus XPE (in which it is associated with methyl metsulfuron), is a member of the sulphur family. The product is produced and marketed by Du Pont de Nemours and is used for weed control during early post-emergence, following the appearance of at least two leaves, during the autumn or at the end of winter.
Ethyl-carfentrazon, associated with methyl metsulfuron in Allié Express, with mecoprop-P in Platform Express, and with methyl-flupyrsulfuron in Lexus Class, has been authorised for sale since April 1998. Each of these three products is used for weed control during early post-emergence in autumn, late winter and even early spring (Allié Express and Lexus Class from the two leaf until tilling, and Platform Express from the three-leaf until the 2 node stage). The speed of action of ethyl carfentrazon is of particular interest to cereal growers.
Puma LS is a new product containing ethyl-fenoxaprop associated with a new plant safener. Produced by AgrEvo, it is less harmful for both the environment and the applicator. It is likely that such a combination could in time be used on barley crops.
