Weed control in non-farming areas (?zones non agricoles? or ?ZNA? in French) is currently facing a new regulatory situation brought about on the one hand by the effects of the European re-evaluation of former active ingredients, and on the other hand some decisions of the French authorities.
On a European level, 4 herbicide molecules authorised for use in non-farming areas in France are listed in appendix 1 of directive 91/414, and 10, of which 8 are still authorized in France, are currently being examined. Furthermore, 16 non-farming areas herbicide molecules will be banned without examination in 2003. Besides the above, atrazin and simazin were banned in France in 1997, and diuron is subject to certain restrictions. After that terbuthylazin was banned and diuron was subject to new restrictions.
The substitution of a active ingredient for another has shown to have certain drawbacks. There is a need for good plant protection practices in non-farming areas.
