Basic principles for creating protective hedges which encourage the development of beneficials
Habitat management is an ecological approach which aims to encourage the implantation and to increase the numbers of populations of natural enemies of cultivated plants. This approach involves manipulation of the natural environment in order to enhance biological control in agricultural systems.
In this article, after providing a recap of the definition of certain ecological terms, we present the basic principles which help to increase biodiversity, i.e. to enhance the populations of beneficial fauna in plot borders, the areas surrounding crops.
Finally, we provide a description of experiments carried out in a pear-tree orchard overseen by our Avignon branch of the national agronomic research institute, and the effects of these on pear-tree psyllid.
