A survey of weeds present in French vineyards was carried out during the 1999/2000 season by the Columa « Grapevine » group. The survey covered 83 field specialists working in nine of the major wine-producing regions. The survey helped to specify which, of the 130 species or taxons found in vineyards, are the most difficult to control.
44 taxons were considered as giving cause for concern. Of these, 12 were classified as being particularly problematic : several of these had already achieved this status during a survey carried out in 1981, but others are new arrivals, thus indicating a significant development. It is also important to point out the importance of regional specificities.
The results of the survey make it possible to adopt a rational approach for soil maintenance, well-adapted to specific regional characteristics.
