Looking back several months on at the 2nd Biovision forum which was held last February in Lyons, the most abiding memories are of the high standard of papers presented, the hope for the future provided by biotechnologies in general (deciphering of the human genome) and also the debates on GM crops.
It was extremely interesting to hear the first-hand accounts from Argentinian farmers (who are pro-GM, with 90% of their soya and 30% of their corn being transgenic) as well as those from other countries (China, India, Mexico). Research which is currently ongoing into the production of golden rice (genetically modified to be enriched in provitamin A) was the subject of great debate. Furthermore, no consensus could be reached on the right attitude to adopt to deal with public concerns in relation to this issue.
