The breeding of Fragaria x ananassa Duch. strawberry plants, in order to increase resistance to Phytophthora cactorum (L. & C.) Schroet, requires the use of reliable techniques capable of establishing the sensitivity of varieties at the selection stage.
Within the context of a study of sensitivity to P. cactorum, determination of the most stable resistance (Sengana) and sensitivity (Arking) control samples will allow centres using the method defined in 1977 by G. Risser and M. Pitrat (Avignon branch of the national agronomic research institute) to work with the same reference system.
Following a bibliographical review of methods used in European institutes and a pluri-annual analysis of CIREF data since 1992, this easy-to-use method would appear to be sufficiently discriminative for selectors and to produce, stable long-term results.
