Spinosad (marketed as « Tracer ») is an insecticide extracted from the fermentation of the actinomyces Saccharopolyspora spinosa. It operates by contact, particularly at the larva stage. The efficacy of the product has been tested on Ectomyelois ceratoniae Zeller (Lep. Pyralidae) date moth.
Azadiractin is a natural by-product of margosa (Azadirachta indica), which has a repulsive action on adult insects and inhibits the hormone responsible for moulting at the larva stage. The efficacy of the product has also been tested on E. ceratoniae Zeller date moth.
The article presents and discusses the ways in which spinosad and azadiractin should be used and gives details of the results of trials.
