As the national school of Agriculture in Montpellier celebrates the 150th anniversary of its inauguration, the article describes a number of key elements of its history, presenting a number of teachers/research scientists who have played an active role in the field of study of plant parasites. The review starts with the earliest examples (grapevine specialists dealing with Phylloxera disaster or sericiculture specialists working in the wake of Pasteur's discoveries) and moves through to the present day incumbents, with close attention paid to those who can really be called ecologists in strict scientific terms.
