The purpose of our study was to examine the persistence of Ceratocystis fimbriata f. platani, an agent of plane tree canker stain, in the roots of two batches of disease-ridden trees cut down and devitalised with glyphosate.
The parasite was still strongly present in the batch cut down 16 months prior to testing and also to a slight extent in the batch cut down 5 years before. It can therefore be concluded that a period of five years is insufficient for conducting terrassing work.
A study of the distribution of the parasite in the roots of the batch cut down 16 months prior to the test shows that the presence diminishes in proportion to the distance from the stump and the diameter of the root. This finding clearly pleads in favour of the pulling up of diseased stumps.
