In the wake of wide-ranging changes, the well-named, and somewhat evocative « Brighton Conference » will be held in Glasgow from 2003 onwards. In November 2002, the conference dealt with the control of diseases and the protection of plants against pests.
Four new insecticides and acaricides were presented (spiromesifen manufactured by Bayer CropScience, clothianidin by Takeda Chemical, spirodiclofen by Bayer CropScience and pyridalyl by Sumitomo Chemical) as well as two alternative means of insecticidal control : neuropeptides used in regulating the physiology of insects and plant extracts acting on the feeding activity of pales weevil.
For disease control, a new large-scale strobilurin (i.e. fluoxastrobin) could possibly be used in association with another new arrival, prothioconazol. Both are produced by Bayer Crop-Science, and can be associated with other fungicides. A third, ethaboxam from LG Life Sciences, inhibits mycelial growth and the sporulation of Phytophthora infestans. Elsewhere, a working group from the University of Izmir, in Turkey, presented a yeast, which when added to a fungicide program increases efficacy by stimulating the natural defence mechanisms of plants.
